Halloween 6 Producer

I don’t think it’s a ‘great’ film, but man, it is SO much better than the theatrical cut.

The theatrical cut was my introduction to the franchise. I was young at the time and enjoyed it a great deal… and I think it was the hyper-stylization that sucked me in. It was ‘hip’ and ‘edgy’, and I was sold. After the fact, I watched the rest of the franchise… and realized Curse was the odd man out. That said, I still had a lot of love for it… it was a fun horror flick in its own right, even if it didn’t do anything story-wise but confuse the audience with hints of a ‘man in black here’ and a ‘thorn cult’ there. Of course I got a bit older, and when I revisited this film about a year ago… I didn’t have the same love for it as I used to.

I always knew about the Producer’s Cut, and ‘acquiring’ it online was always an option… but it was a horrendous VHS rip and barely watchable. As a result, I never thought I’d be able to see this version in its proper form.

Halloween 6: Producer's Cut, Anyone??? Discussion in 'All other topics' started by Halen5150, Sep 24, 2006. I think it's just that every p-cut torrent I find there's never enough people sharing to where you can get a good dl speed. I just found this link which has some deleted scenes from the movie open for download; so do u think I. For me, the holy grail, the most elusive of all special cuts of the films I've loved, for years, has been Halloween 666: Producer's Cut, and almost 20 years later, it's finally here. I distinctly title it differently from the theatrical release, because to me, this isn't merely an alternate version, it's an entirely separate movie.

Well, last night I finally got to see ‘the holy grail’ of the franchise, and while the ending wasn’t as impressive as the theatrical cut, the film overall was much, much stronger.

In the first two or three minutes alone, I thought, “This already feels different… like they’re drawing the suspense of what’s happening more than they had before.” I kept watching, and confirmed this wasn’t my imagination. They really allowed the opening act to marinate… compared to the theatrical, there were no ‘fast edits’. They didn’t just rush through where Jamie was giving birth, so they could get us right into some Michael Myers action. Instead, what was once a short monologue done by Paul Rudd, instead becomes a lengthy monologue with Dr. Loomis, and there’s even a brief recap of events from Halloween 5, to remind us about ‘the man in black’ that broke Michael out of Smith’s Grove at the end. And when Jamie finally goes on the run… there’s no ‘heavy metal Halloween theme’, no riffs thrashing about to make the chase feel ‘edgier’ than it is. What mostly sounds like the original score has been used… I won’t spoil a thing, other than to say Jamie’s fate is a bit different than it was in the theatrical cut.

There are a lot of additional scenes with Loomis. He was in the theatrical cut, but he didn’t seem to have as ‘solid’ a role as he did in prior entries. Loomis was always at the forefront of ‘the investigation’, and while he kept popping up along the way in 6’s theatrical cut, he didn’t feel like he was at the heart of the matter. This time around, he has a bit more screen time and feels like the same old Loomis... just an older, retired version.

Basically, the original version of Halloween 6 was screened for a younger audience, and during the Q&A afterward, one of them express great displeasure with the film’s ending. So, reshoots occurred, filming an entirely new ending which almost dropped the ‘Curse of Thorn’ concept entirely. In order to make the film ‘tighter’ and ‘more exciting’, about 20 minutes of other footage was removed, which created a bunch of the plot holes we see in the theatrical.

What plot holes? Well, the ‘cult’ and the whole ‘Curse of Thorn’ thing didn’t make sense. Now it does. The blonde haired boy, Danny… he was ‘hearing the voice’ just like Michael did when he was a child, but what exactly did that mean? Now we know. Why is it so important for Michael to track down every remaining family member in his bloodline? We know that too. Why did the old lady that owned the house Tommy Doyle was living in turn on them? We get to see a bit more about that. It’s stuff like this… when the producer was writing the original script, he really wanted to tie-in all the ideas that were presented in the first two films with the other stuff presented in Halloween 5 (4 a bit as well, but mostly 5). This cut of the film makes mostly everything fit.

There were also changes to existing scenes to make things more violent/gorier. Also, the reshoots had to happen without Donald Pleasance, because he had passed away before the reshoots began.

So, that’s what we got, the ‘fast and exciting’ version of Halloween 6… which I appreciated for years and years. It had some cool imagery and some of the filmed shoots were creative and cool to look at, but it didn’t feel like a ‘Halloween’ movie at its core… just an edgier more ‘menacing’ version.

The new film has a pretty ‘meh’ ending, but I believe it was meant to keep the hope alive for a sequel. So, that was a bit of a bummer, but the rest of the movie… it feels like what should have been the natural progression after the stuff introduced in Halloween 4 and 5 (because Halloween 5 is when we first see ‘The Thorn’ on Michael’s arm, and see the man in black). There’s a lot of familiarity here, but there’s quite enough that’s different that makes this feel like an entirely different film at the same time.
