I’ve never seen so many people who don’t give a damn about watches suddenly start talking about a watch brand.

  1. Shinola Serial Number
  2. Shinola Runwell Serial Number

Everyone loves a turnaround story, and it goes without question that Detroit, with its creditors pushing the city to dig out of its financial hole by selling off hundreds of millions of dollars of paintings and sculptures from its major art museum, could really use it. Much of this conversation about watches among people who don’t know anything about them is fueled by their hope that Shinola is here to restore American manufacturing and rebuild the Detroit economy.

Signature iconic case back plate with laser-etched serial number. Water resistant 5 ATM/50 meters. Assembled in U.S.A. With domestic and internationally sourced components.

Milled has emails from Shinola Detroit, including new arrivals, sales, discounts, and coupon codes. Shinola Runwell 41mm Review. Jeff Gharakhanian January 21, 2014. You’ll find it’s logo in relief and the watch bears a unique serial number (as a lot of Shinola’s products do). Underneath the proud “BUILT IN DETROIT,” the case back states that the movement is a “USA Movement with Swiss Parts.”. The package includes a Princeton TEC Genesis dive flashlight, three premium strap options, and a beautiful large nautical map of Lake Erie in addition to the 001-500 serial number and a collectible nautical box. This will be the only watch we make with the engraving of the Lake Erie Monster on the caseback. Dec 21, 2015 - These watches are powered by Shinola Detroit-built Argonite. Back of the cases feature a Shinola inscription as well as a serial number.

Shinola is more than just a watch company. With its pristine Detroit-based watchmaking shop headquartered on the fifth floor of the city’s historic Argonaut building, it’s a revived brand, back from the dead to breathe life into a lost art form and a troubled city that was once a proud mecca of American-made manufacturing. Shinola’s flagship Runwell model is a tale of redemption, and the team behind its successful launch told the story so effectively that Shinola got the attention of both watch lovers and defectors. While the brand is extraordinarily clever, Shinola is not the only American-made watch company in existence today, and I held my tongue any time someone nudged me to tell me about this really cool watch that was unique because it was built in America. Partly because more people talking about watches is a good thing, and partly because I, too, want to believe that Shinola is here to save the day.

But this article isn’t about how tremendously effective Shinola’s marketing is. It’s about the watch itself, although sometimes I find it difficult to separate the two because, even after you purchase the Runwell, the brand keeps speaking to you. Before I dive in, let me admit that I know I’m late to the party with the review of the Shinola Runwell. I don’t care. The Runwell has hype, absolutely, but it also has lasting substance. I wanted to experience both, so I borrowed the watch from a friend, took some photos, and wrote a few words on what I saw.

Packaging & Presentation

There is nothing in the world like opening a new Apple product. Apple takes its packaging as seriously as its hardware, and while a lot of watch companies furnish beautiful watch boxes, alternate straps, cloths and manuals with their timepieces, I see room for improvement in the unboxing experience of some luxury watches. Shinola takes a step in the right direction. It’s a downright pleasure opening the wooden display box, and inside the box is an array of accompaniments that reinforce the brand’s narrative.

Open the box and let past and present, together, welcome you to Shinola ownership. Of course, there is the watch, which sits on the left. To the right is a tin of Shinola leather balm to not only maintain the leather strap the Runwell sits on but also to allude to the brand’s prior life as a wax-based shoe polish maker from 1907-1960. You’ll find a stamped metal card that serves triple duty as a warranty card, a reminder of the once-thriving automotive industry, and a very personal reminder of the watch’s origins. I don’t know who Stefan is, but I feel good knowing he’s willing to put his own name on his product. Finally, there’s a leather pouch inside that serves as a carrying case and a reminder that Shinola is a lifestyle brand. They sell leather goods, bicycles and stationary products, too. Everything in the box is a double entendre.

I bet anyone who received a Shinola Runwell this past Christmas was one smitten watch owner.

Case & Dial

There is a significant heft to the watch, which I didn’t expect given that it’s a quartz watch with a leather strap, and it’s the kind of weight that reflects quality craftmanship. Its 41mm case is versatile in size and combined with the weight leaves a satisfying wrist presence. Shinola manufactures a 47mm option that would, on my 6.75″ wrist, be an unforgiving takeover, but the 41mm fits just right.

The Shinola Runwell has a simple and timeless dial that will age very well into the future while featuring a small seconds hand that promotes a clean and legible face. The blue dial is beautiful, the hands are well-proportioned and the orange accents on the dial complement the blue nicely. At this price point, I would have enjoyed applied elements versus painted, at least for the hour markers, as it seems fitting for a $550 quartz watch and would make the dial more three-dimensional. Protecting the dial is a mostly invisible domed sapphire crystal that had some glare but not enough to make photographing it a challenge.

Shinola used a screw-down (and signed) crown for the Runwell. Arched lugs connect the case to its leather strap, and if you want to swap out straps, unscrewing the lugs from the case is likely easier to many people than dealing with finicky spring bars. The case is rated water resistant for up to 50 meters.

For a case back that I can’t see through, I have to give Shinola credit. It’s an industrial look that’s beautifully executed. You’ll find it’s logo in relief and the watch bears a unique serial number (as a lot of Shinola’s products do). Underneath the proud “BUILT IN DETROIT,” the case back states that the movement is a “USA Movement with Swiss Parts.” As you can tell from its advertising and the stamped ID card, Shinola goes to great lengths to let its customers know where the watches come from.

Movement

The Runwell houses an Argonite-1069 caliber quartz movement hand-assembled in Detroit from 46 parts shipped from Ronda AG in Switzerland. Quartz is a low maintenance and economical choice for the brand, allowing you to get a reliable movement with top-notch fit and finish without emptying your wallet. Some might not feel comfortable shelling out $550 for a quartz movement (I personally have a strong bias toward mechanicals), but what I like about the sub-seconds hand is that it disguises the tick-tick-tick of the seconds hand, so you’re not constantly reminded that your watch is battery-powered.

Comfort & Style

The default watch strap on the Runwell is impressive, likely because it’s sourced directly from a strap maker who needs no introduction, Hadley-Roma. The American-made horween leather strap feels great on the wrist and requires no break-in period. The high contrast stitching and case design beg for this watch to be paired with more casual clothing, like a crisp polo or a warm winter sweater.

The Final Word

Is this three-handed quartz watch worth $550? Shinola treats the watch as a whole product, focusing on the design, the movement and the packaging, and when you factor in everything, you begin to see the value. Are diehard watch lovers interested in the niceties of leather cases and wax balm to the extent they’re willing to pay a couple hundred dollars more for this particular quartz watch? For those who have a hard ceiling on what they’re willing to spend on quartz, the Runwell is unlikely to convince you to abandon your principles, but if you just like well-made and good-looking watches, I think you’ll be pleased with this one. Shinola paid very close attention to the details and it shows. While it may be a tad pricey for its technical specs, you will unarguably receive a quality timepiece for your money.

I get why everyone, especially those outside the hobby, were talking about this. Everyone wants Detroit back. The city is in serious trouble. But in a country where people increasingly whip out their smartphones to see the time, will manufacturing analog time-telling machines be enough to revive Detroit? No, of course not, but that’s the wrong question. The right question to ask is: can Detroit attract and sustain new business?

Not many people outside of the watch world know this, but Shinola is a Bedrock Brands company, which is based in Texas and was started by Tom Kartsotis, the founder of Fossil Watches. The point in mentioning this fact is to point out that Shinola is not and never has been a struggling startup company that bootstrapped itself to success in a struggling city, so if you want to be hypercritical of the brand, then you could accuse it of being a well-funded marketing machine masquerading as a charitable enterprise (as some have). And my aim in bringing up such a cynical angle is not to end this write-up on a sour note but instead to address such accusations: even if it is true that Bedrock is exploiting Detroit’s misfortune to profit from luxury goods (I’m not convinced it is), the joke is on Shinola. The company is still bringing revenue and jobs to Detroit by manufacturing and selling high-quality and handsome watches that its customers love. That’s undoubtedly a win.

So, can Detroit attract and sustain new business? Shinola is proving that it can. Sure, it takes more than one company to revive an economy, but every revolution begins with one.

Thank you to my friend and Detroit native, John Laramie, for letting me borrow his Shinola Runwell. No one else I know is rooting harder for the city’s revival.
